What is ultrasound therapy?
Ultrasound therapy uses an ultrasound probe to send mechanical waves through the skin and to the underlying tissues. The mechanical waves produced are generated by sending electricity to crystals located in the ultrasound probe head. The ultrasound wave properties (frequency, wavelength, and velocity) will be selected by your chiropractor to provide optimal therapeutic benefit. These ultrasound waves can be targeted to superficial or deep tissues of the body. The therepeutic ultrasound waves cause the tissues to vibrate at a very high rate causing the tissues to heat up. Often times the heat created during the procedure can not be felt. Your chiropractor or therapist will continuously move the ultrasound probe as to not focus the waves in the same area for a prolonged period of time. Ultrasound therapy helps to reduce pain, speed up the healing process, improve the quality of healing, and ultimately decrease inflammation.
