What are Chiropractic Adjustments?
Chiropractic adjustments (sometimes referred to as “spinal manipulations”) are a small amount of quick force that is applied to joints of the body. Chiropractic adjustments should always be performed by licensed doctors (most commonly adjustments are performed by Doctors of Chiropractic). Chiropractic adjustments are frequently performed to the vertebral joints of the spine; however, they can also be applied to other joints of the body such as: hips, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, elbows, wrist, and hands.
Purpose of Chiropractic Adjustments
Chiropractic adjustments are usually used to treat joint restrictions. Joint restrictions are often the result of injuries (acute or chronic) to the surrounding tissues of the vertebral joints. Chiropractic adjustments help to restore motion to these joints which helps to relieve pain and relax the surrounding musculature. Our Chiropractors perform a thorough examination to determine if there are any joint restrictions or other conditions where the utilization of chiropractic adjustments would be beneficial. Joint restrictions are often detected by range of motion assessments and palpation of the joints and tissues around the area of complaint.
Are Chiropractic Adjustments safe?
Chiropractic adjustments, when applied by a licensed professional, are a safe procedure and serious side effects are very rare. There are a few conditions where chiropractic adjustments may not be safe. As with any health treatment, it is important for the chiropractor to rule out contraindications prior to treatment. The patient should be as specific as possible about their symptoms during their examination so that our chiropractors can make appropriate decisions when creating a treatment plan. Doctors of Chiropractic are highly trained to detect when the application of a chiropractic adjustment would not be safe.
The most common side effects of chiropractic adjustments are mild discomfort or soreness that usually resolves within 24 hours after treatment. (1)
Techniques Our Doctors Utilize
DIVERSIFIED TECHNIQUE
Diversified technique is the most common method used by chiropractors. This technique uses a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust applied by the hands of the chiropractor to specific joints. The purpose of this technique is to restore motion to restricted joints.
FLEXION-DISTRACTION
Flexion-distraction is performed with a very specialized treatment table. RYSE Chiropractic + Spa has the best flexion-distraction tables available in the industry. Our flexion-distraction tables are automated and can provide various amounts of vertebral joint distraction using an air compression system. Flexion-distraction helps to decompress the joints of the lumbar spine which can alleviate pain and relax the surrounding musculature. This technique is particularly useful when lumbar disk herniations are suspected.
ACTIVATOR TECHNIQUE
Activator technique uses a special instrument to apply a gentle force that helps to restore motion to restricted joints. Our chiropractors use this treatment method for patients who need a more gentle technique or where Diversified Technique is not appropriate.
